Water test kits for aquariums and ponds, be aware that some kits are specific to freshwater use.
Within your aqaurium, fish waste together with uneaten food and dead fish or plants are decomposed in a process known as the Nitrogen Cycle. This cycle involves the decomposition of fish waste etc. into ammonia, ammonia into nitrite, and nitrite into nitrate. Ammonia, nitrite and to a lesser extent nitrate are harmful to the fish in your aqaurium, but should not reach dangerous levels if you have suitable biological filtration.
Remember should you decide to make changes to your water (using chemical treatments) always read the instructions carefully.
