Fish and the decomposition of fish waste etc produces toxic ammoinia (NH3) and the relatively non-toxic ammonium ion (NH4+). Both are easily converted into the other with the relative amounts of each present in the water being largley dependent on the pH of the water. At a pH of above 7.5 increasing quantities of toxic ammonia (NH3) are formed. below a pH of 7.0 the ammonia exists mainly as the less toxic ammonium ion (NH4+). Levels of total ammonia (NH3/NH4+) of only 0,25mg per liter of water can be harmful to your fish and other aquarium inhabitants.
The Tetratest kit (NH3/NH4+) was professionally developed to accurately determine the ammonia level in your aqaurium water. To ensure optimum water quality, weekly testing is strongly advised.
